Great Pond Sedge
Carex riparia, the Great Pond Sedge, is a robust native perennial sedge, forming large, architectural tussocks of broad, grey-green, grass-like leaves. This impressive plant provides a strong vertical element to pond margins, fens, and boggy areas, offering excellent habitat and cover for wildlife, particularly waterfowl. In late spring to early summer, it produces distinctive brownish-green flower spikes, followed by interesting seed heads. It thrives in consistently moist to wet soil or shallow water (up to 30cm deep) in full sun to partial shade. Reaching a height of 60-120cm with a similar spread, it's ideal for larger, naturalistic aquatic planting schemes. Fully hardy and very resilient.
