Cyperus Sedge
This is one of the most attractive native sedges for the UK pond side. It forms large, dense tufts of bright, yellowish-green, strap-like leaves that have a sharp texture. The real highlight, however, is the decorative fruiting spikes that appear in midsummer. These are large, pendulous, and bristly, hanging down in clusters and remaining attractive well into the winter. It grows to a height and spread of about 80-90cm. It is a robust and hardy plant (H6) that thrives in wet mud at the water's edge or in shallow water up to 10cm deep. It is particularly effective for naturalising large pond banks or for adding a wild, misty texture to a marshy area. It is excellent for wildlife, providing cover for amphibians and nesting material for birds. It prefers full sun but will do well in partial shade. Unlike many sedges, it remains relatively tidy and clump-forming.
