Allspice Rose 'Hartlage Wine'

'Hartlage Wine' is a spectacular interspecific hybrid that has become a favourite among UK shrub enthusiasts. It is a vigorous, large deciduous shrub with large, glossy green leaves. In early to mid-summer, it produces stunning, slightly fragrant, maroon-red flowers that resemble small magnolias or water lilies. The flowers are roughly 7-10cm across and are held at the ends of the branches. It is fully hardy in the UK but appreciates a sheltered position to protect the large leaves from wind damage. It thrives in deep, fertile, moist but well-drained soil and can grow in either full sun or partial shade. In autumn, the foliage typically turns a clear yellow. It requires plenty of space to develop its naturally upright, spreading habit. Light pruning can be done in winter or early spring to remove dead wood or maintain shape, but it generally requires little intervention. This plant is a true conversation piece for any large garden border.
