China Aster 'King Size Appleblossom'

'King Size Appleblossom' is a truly elegant China Aster that produces large, fully double, peony-like blooms on tall, robust stems. The colour is a delicate, pale shell-pink that fades to white at the edges, reminiscent of apple blossoms. Reaching about 80cm in height, it is an essential plant for the late-summer UK cutting garden. Asters are half-hardy (H2) and can be prone to wilt, so it is best to grow them in a different spot each year and avoid overwatering. Sow seeds indoors in March or April and plant out in late May. They prefer a sunny, sheltered spot and a soil rich in organic matter. These plants provide much-needed colour and nectar in the garden when many other annuals are beginning to fade. The "King Size" series is particularly noted for its stem length and flower size, making it a favorite for impressive indoor displays. Support may be needed in windy gardens.
