Golden Butterfly Bush 'Sungold'
'Sungold' is a unique and beautiful deciduous shrub that differs from the more common purple Buddlejas. It produces globose clusters of tiny, fragrant, golden-yellow flowers with orange eyes throughout the summer and into autumn. These flowers are exceptionally rich in nectar and are a major draw for butterflies and bees. The plant has an arching habit and grey-green, lance-shaped leaves. In the UK, it is hardy to H5 and grows vigorously, easily reaching 3 metres or more. It should be planted in full sun and well-drained soil for the best results. To keep it within bounds and encourage the largest flower clusters, it should be pruned hard back to a low framework in early spring. It is a hybrid between B. davidii and B. globosa, inheriting the elongated panicle shape of the former and the yellow colour of the latter. It is an excellent choice for a wildlife-friendly back of the border.
