Swede 'Marian'

'Marian' is a highly popular and reliable variety of swede (known as rutabaga in some regions) that is specifically bred for the UK climate. It produces medium-sized, round roots with a purple top and attractive yellow flesh. This variety is particularly valued for its excellent culinary qualities, possessing a sweet, mild flavour and a smooth texture when cooked. 'Marian' is also noted for its good resistance to clubroot and powdery mildew, two common problems for brassica growers in Britain. It is a very hardy vegetable that can be left in the ground and harvested throughout the winter, with the flavour often improving after a few frosts. Seeds are usually sown from May to June for a winter crop. It requires a firm, well-drained soil and a sunny position. Like other brassicas, it should be grown in a rotation to prevent the build-up of soil-borne diseases. It is a low-maintenance crop that provides a steady supply of nutritious food during the colder months.
