Chinese Cabbage 'One Kilo'
'One Kilo' is a reliable and fast-maturing variety of Chinese Cabbage (Napa Cabbage) well-suited to the UK's cooler growing seasons. It produces dense, barrel-shaped heads with pale green outer leaves and a crisp, white heart. This variety is particularly valued for its slow-bolting habit, making it easier to grow than many traditional oriental greens. It has a compact, upright habit and is best grown as a late summer or autumn crop, as spring sowings often bolt due to increasing day length. It thrives in moist, fertile soil and requires consistent watering to prevent the heads from becoming bitter. Protection from slugs and snails is essential, as they find the tender leaves particularly attractive. 'One Kilo' is excellent for stir-fries, salads, or pickling as kimchi. Its ability to mature quickly (often in 50-60 days) makes it an excellent 'catch crop' to follow early peas or potatoes.
