Broccoli 'Inspiration'

'Inspiration' is a superb example of the semi-perennial sprouting broccoli varieties that have become popular in the UK. It is a "Bimi" or "broccolini" type, often called tenderstem broccoli in shops. This variety is exceptionally productive over a long period. Once the main central head is harvested, the plant produces an abundance of long, slender, succulent side-stems with small, loose heads. The entire stem is tender and has a sweet, peppery flavour, requiring very little cooking. In the UK, it can be sown in spring for a summer harvest or in late summer for an autumn crop. It is relatively hardy but appreciates a sheltered spot. Like all brassicas, it is a "hungry" plant and performs best in fertile, firm soil with a good supply of nitrogen and consistent moisture. Protection from the cabbage white butterfly is essential. Its ability to provide multiple harvests from a single plant makes it a highly efficient choice for smaller vegetable plots or raised beds.

Sun: Full sun.

Soil: Rich, firm, well-drained soil.
