Sprouting Broccoli 'White Star'

'White Star' is a sophisticated F1 hybrid version of the traditional sprouting broccoli, producing a prolific crop of creamy-white spears instead of the more common purple ones. In the UK, it serves as a vital bridge in the 'hungry gap'—that period in late spring when winter crops are finishing and summer crops aren't yet ready. It is a very hardy plant that is best sown in early summer and transplanted to its final position, where it will grow into a large, branching framework over the winter. Harvesting begins in March and April. The white spears are incredibly tender and have a mild, refined broccoli flavour that is often compared to asparagus. Regular picking of the spears as they appear is vital to keep the plant productive for several weeks. It requires a firm, fertile, alkaline soil and, because of its height and the timing of its crop, it usually needs staking to prevent it from flopping in spring winds.
