Broccoli (Calabrese) 'Ironman'
'Ironman' is a high-performing Calabrese variety specifically bred for the UK climate, offering excellent uniformity and reliability. This F1 hybrid produces large, dense, blue-green domed heads with a fine bead structure that holds well on the plant without bolting too quickly. The habit is upright and vigorous, reaching approximately 45cm in height. It is particularly valued by British gardeners for its versatility, as it can be sown in succession for harvests from mid-summer through to late autumn. Like most brassicas, it thrives in firm, alkaline to neutral soil that is well-consolidated to prevent wind-rock. It is hardy to H3, though the curds can be damaged by severe frosts. Protecting the young plants from pigeons and cabbage white butterflies with netting is highly recommended. It requires a sunny spot and regular watering to ensure the heads remain succulent and do not become bitter.
