Broccoli 'Belstar'
'Belstar' is a highly reliable F1 hybrid calabrese-type broccoli that performs exceptionally well in the variable UK climate. It is noted for its ability to produce large, tight, blue-green primary heads followed by a prolific supply of smaller side shoots after the main head is harvested, extending the picking season. This variety is particularly valued for its heat tolerance, which prevents it from bolting during uncharacteristically warm British summers, and its good stress resistance. The plants have a compact, upright habit, making them suitable for smaller vegetable plots. Like most brassicas, 'Belstar' requires a firm, fertile soil and protection from common pests like cabbage white butterflies and pigeons. It is an excellent source of vitamins and has a tender, sweet flavour when steamed or boiled. Sowing can be staggered from March to June to provide harvests from mid-summer through to late autumn. It provides a commercial-quality crop for the domestic vegetable grower.
