Brussels Sprout 'Evesham Special'
A traditional British heirloom variety that remains popular for its reliability and excellent flavor. 'Evesham Special' produces sturdy, medium-sized stalks densely packed with firm, dark green sprouts. It is particularly well-suited to the UK climate, providing a heavy crop of sprouts from mid-autumn through to early winter. The plants are robust and exhibit good standing ability in the garden, resisting the wind and rain of a typical British winter. Brussels sprouts require a long growing season and firm, fertile soil to prevent the sprouts from 'blowing' (opening up). Incorporating well-rotted manure the previous autumn is highly recommended. The sprouts have a sweet, nutty flavor that improves significantly after the first frosts, which convert starches into sugars. This variety is a staple of the traditional Christmas dinner and provides essential winter greens. High levels of nitrogen and regular firming of the soil around the base of the plant help ensure success.
