Brussels Sprout 'Crispus'
'Crispus' is a specialized F1 hybrid cultivar of Brussels Sprout bred specifically for its clubroot resistance, a significant advantage for UK gardeners dealing with infected soil. This mid-season variety produces tall, sturdy stems lined with smooth, dark green, medium-sized buttons that remain firm and tight for long periods. The flavour is excellent, offering a refined, sweet nuttiness particularly after the first autumn frosts have converted some of the starches to sugars. It is exceptionally hardy, standing well in the garden through the harshest British winters from October until February. Like most brassicas, it requires a firm, alkaline to neutral soil to prevent the tall stalks from rocking in the wind, which can damage the root system. High nitrogen levels are beneficial early in the season, followed by potassium to encourage button firmness. The plants should be spaced widely to allow for air circulation and staked in exposed sites. It is a reliable performer that brings fresh greens to the Christmas table.
