Brussels Sprout 'Hestia'
'Hestia' is a modern F1 hybrid Brussels sprout that combines an exceptionally sweet flavor with a compact, sturdy growth habit. This mid-season variety is particularly well-suited to the UK climate, producing a heavy crop of smooth, medium-sized, bright green sprouts that are held firmly on the stem. Unlike older varieties, 'Hestia' is remarkably free from bitterness, making it a favorite even for those who typically avoid this vegetable. The plants exhibit great standing ability, meaning the sprouts can be harvested over a long period from autumn through to mid-winter without deteriorating. It requires a firm, fertile soil to prevent the plants from rocking in the wind, and in exposed sites, staking may be necessary. To ensure a good crop, keep the area weed-free and protect the young plants from birds and cabbage white butterflies. It is an excellent choice for the traditional British Christmas dinner.
