Cabbage 'Kilaton'
'Kilaton' is an outstanding F1 hybrid white cabbage that has become a favourite among UK vegetable growers, largely due to its remarkable resistance to clubroot, a soil-borne disease that can devastate brassica crops. This Dutch white-type cabbage produces very large, extremely dense, globe-shaped heads that can weigh up to 4kg if given enough space. The heads are crisp and white inside, making them perfect for coleslaws, salads, or sauerkraut. 'Kilaton' is a late-season variety, usually harvested from September through to November, and it has an excellent standing ability, meaning the heads can stay in the ground for a long time without splitting. It also stores very well in a cool, frost-free place for several months. The plants require a very firm, fertile soil and plenty of space—typically 45-60cm between plants. Protection from caterpillars and pigeons is recommended to keep the large, waxy leaves intact. It is a heavy-cropping, reliable choice for the winter larder.
