Cabbage 'Golden Acre'

'Golden Acre' is a quick-maturing, heritage variety of summer cabbage that has been a favourite in the UK for generations. It produces compact, round heads with light green, crisp leaves and a delicate, sweet flavour. Because it reaches maturity much faster than many other varieties, usually within 60 to 70 days of planting, it is an excellent choice for successional sowing to provide a steady supply throughout the summer months. Its compact habit makes it ideal for smaller gardens or raised beds where space is limited. The heads are remarkably resistant to splitting, allowing them to stand in the garden for a short while once mature. It prefers a sunny position and firm, fertile, alkaline to neutral soil. Like most cabbage varieties, it benefits from protection against cabbage white butterflies and pigeons. It is perfect for shredding into coleslaws or lightly steaming as a side dish.
