Cabbage 'Greyhound'
'Greyhound' is one of the most popular and earliest 'first-early' pointed cabbages grown in the UK. This heritage variety is loved for its compact size, making it perfect for smaller gardens where space is at a premium. It produces solid, heart-shaped heads with few outer leaves and have a very fine internal texture and sweet flavour. Because it matures so quickly—often within 10 to 12 weeks of planting—it is less likely to be affected by the pests and diseases that plague slower-growing brassicas. It is best eaten fresh from the garden rather than stored. Sowings can be made from February under glass, or directly outdoors from March to July to provide a succession of harvests. It does not require as much space between plants as larger cabbage varieties. Like all cabbages, it appreciates a firm soil and regular watering during dry spells. It is a reliable and rewarding vegetable for the novice gardener.
