Cauliflower 'Amedeo'

'Amedeo' is an excellent F1 hybrid cauliflower variety specifically suited for autumn harvesting in the UK. It produces high-quality, dense, snowy-white heads that are exceptionally well-protected by their inner leaves, which helps to prevent yellowing from the sun or frost damage. This variety is known for its vigour and uniformity, reaching a height of about 45-50cm. Growing cauliflowers in Britain can be challenging, but 'Amedeo' is more reliable than many older varieties. It requires a firm, very fertile, moisture-retentive soil and must never be allowed to dry out, as this can lead to 'buttoning' (forming tiny, useless heads). It should be planted out in early summer for a late autumn harvest. Like all brassicas, it is hardy (H3) but the curds themselves are sensitive to hard frosts. Protection from birds and cabbage white caterpillars is essential for a successful crop. Its flavour is mild and sweet, perfect for steaming or cauliflower cheese.
