Kale 'Black Magic'

A refined selection of the traditional Italian Lacinato or 'Cavolo Nero' kale, specifically improved for the UK climate. 'Black Magic' forms an upright rosette of deeply savoyed, narrow, dark blue-green leaves that appear almost black in some lights. It is highly architectural and is frequently used in ornamental "edimental" borders as well as dedicated vegetable plots. This variety is exceptionally hardy and actually improves in flavour after being touched by frost, which converts starches into sugars. It is slower to bolt than many other kales and offers a long harvest window from autumn right through to the following spring. The leaves have a rich, complex flavour and a tender texture when the central rib is removed. It is generally resistant to pests like pigeons and cabbage white butterflies if netted, and it handles poor soil conditions better than most brassicas, provided it is well-drained. It reaches a height of about 60-80cm.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Any well-drained soil, especially alkaline.

Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.
