Swede 'Gowrie'
'Gowrie' is a highly regarded swede variety specifically bred in Scotland to withstand the rigours of the northern climate, making it exceptionally well-suited for UK gardeners nationwide. This mid-season cultivar produces uniform, globe-shaped roots with a distinct purple crown and a creamy-yellow base. Inside, the flesh is deep yellow, firm, and has a superb, sweet flavour that improves after the first frosts of autumn. 'Gowrie' is particularly noted for its excellent resistance to both clubroot and powdery mildew, two common challenges for brassica growers in Britain. This makes it a very reliable choice for the allotment. The roots can be harvested from October onwards and have brilliant standing ability, meaning they can be left in the ground through the winter and pulled as needed. In the kitchen, it is a versatile winter staple, perfect for mashing with carrots or adding to hearty stews. It thrives in a cool, damp environment in a firm, well-worked soil.
