McClure's Bamboo
A relatively recent introduction to the UK from the high altitudes of Tibet, Borinda macclureana is a stunning specimen for the collector. It forms a dense, non-invasive clump of upright then arching canes. The young culms are often covered in a beautiful blue-grey waxy bloom, maturing to a soft olive green. Its foliage is delicate and remarkably pendulous, creating a soft, fountain-like appearance that looks particularly effective near water or as a specimen plant. It is exceptionally hardy (H5) due to its mountain origins but prefers a position sheltered from the hottest midday sun and harsh winds to maintain its leaf quality. It does best in cool, moist, acidic to neutral soils. It is an excellent choice for gardeners looking for the 'blue' bamboo look in a clumping form that is more robust than some Himalayacalamus species.
Sun: Partial shade.
