Hardy Orchid

Bletilla striata, commonly known as the Hardy Orchid or Chinese Ground Orchid, is a beautiful and surprisingly robust tuberous perennial, bringing an exotic flair to UK gardens without the fuss associated with tropical orchids. It produces elegant spikes of delicate, orchid-like flowers, typically in shades of pinkish-purple, with a frilly lip, in late spring to early summer. The pleated, lance-shaped leaves add to its tropical appearance. It thrives in partial shade and moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Ideal for woodland gardens, shady borders, or containers, it adds a touch of sophistication. It is relatively low maintenance and, once established, can form attractive clumps, offering a stunning and unusual display.
