Downy Birch

A native UK deciduous tree, similar to Silver Birch but more tolerant of wet, poor, or acidic soils, and often found in boggy sites. It grows to 10-20m tall with a more upright, less weeping habit than B. pendula, and a spread of 5-8m. Fully hardy (H7), it thrives in full sun or partial shade. The bark is grey-white and less peeling than Silver Birch. Catkins appear in spring, followed by hairy leaves that turn yellow in autumn. An excellent pioneer species and important for wildlife, especially in challenging growing conditions.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Moist to wet, acidic tolerant.

Hardiness: H7 — below −20°C.

Flowering: Apr, May.
