Nisbet's Birch 'Spider Alley'
Betula pendula 'Spider Alley' is a unique and structurally striking Silver Birch discovered in the UK. It is a small deciduous tree characterized by its fascinating, twisted, and contorted branches, which give it a jagged, 'spider-like' appearance, particularly visible in the winter months when the leaves have fallen. As the tree matures, the bark develops the characteristic silver-white peeling texture associated with birches, but with additional dark cracks. The leaves are also slightly curled and turn a bright butter-yellow in autumn. It is fully hardy (H6) and very undemanding, growing well in most soil types, including poor or sandy soils. Its relatively small size and upright, narrow habit make it a perfect choice for small gardens or as a conversation piece in a larger border. It provides year-round interest: catkins in spring, fresh foliage in summer, yellow colour in autumn, and a dramatic, skeletal silhouette in winter. Best planted in full sun to highlight the bark and branch structure.
