Beetroot 'Solo'

Beetroot 'Solo' is a modern F1 hybrid 'monogerm' variety, which is a significant advantage for the home gardener. Standard beetroot seeds are actually clusters of several seeds, requiring tedious thinning out after germination; 'Solo' seeds each produce only one plant, greatly simplifying the growing process and reducing root disturbance. This variety produces perfectly uniform, round, smooth-skinned roots with a deep red colour and no internal rings. The flavour is sweet and the texture is remarkably tender, even when the roots become quite large. In the UK, it can be sown from March through to July for a long harvesting season. It is also slow to bolt, making it more reliable during dry spells. Beetroot thrives in light, well-drained soil that isn't too rich in nitrogen, which can lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of the root. The young leaves are also edible and make a colourful addition to salads. It is highly recommended for those looking for a low-maintenance crop.
