Golden BarberryBase

Berberis × stenophylla is a magnificent and formidable evergreen hybrid that makes an outstanding boundary hedge. It is characterized by its long, arching, fountain-like branches covered in small, narrow, dark green leaves with a silvery underside. In mid-to-late spring, the shrub is transformed by a breathtaking display of golden-yellow, honey-scented flowers that hang in clusters along the stems. These are followed by small, blue-black berries in autumn. Because the stems are armed with sharp spines, it forms a completely impenetrable barrier, making it one of the best "security" hedges available. It is very tough, fast-growing, and copes well with wind and most soil types, including poor soils, once established. It can be left to grow naturally for an informal look or clipped after flowering to maintain a more formal shape. It is fully hardy across the UK and is a superb plant for both aesthetics and utility.
