Golden Barberry 'Etna'

Berberis × stenophylla 'Etna' is a compact and exceptionally hardy evergreen shrub that provides a formidable and beautiful barrier. It is a cultivar of the popular hybrid barberry, grown for its dense, arching habit and smaller, more manageable size, typically reaching about 1.5 metres. The foliage consists of tiny, spine-tipped, dark green leaves that remain attractive throughout the year. In mid to late spring, the plant is almost entirely covered in a spectacular display of bright orange-yellow, cup-shaped flowers that emit a delicate fragrance and attract various pollinators. These are followed by small, blue-black berries in the autumn. Due to its spiny nature, it is an excellent choice for security hedging. It is extremely tough (H6) and can withstand exposed sites and most soil types, including heavy clay. Pruning should be carried out immediately after flowering to ensure plenty of flower-bearing wood for the following year.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Most well-drained soils, including clay.

Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.

Flowering: Apr, May.
