Rosemary-leaved Barberry 'Corallina Compacta'
A superb dwarf evergreen shrub that forms a dense, low hedge with spectacular early season interest. 'Corallina Compacta' is a more manageable version of the larger hybrid barberry. It features arching stems covered in small, narrow, dark green leaves that resemble rosemary foliage. In mid to late spring, the plant is completely transformed by a profusion of bright, coral-red buds that open into brilliant golden-yellow flowers. The effect is a stunning two-tone display of orange and gold. These are followed by small, blue-black berries in the autumn. Given its sharp spines, it makes an excellent 'keep-out' hedge for low boundaries. It is very hardy (H5) and thrives in any well-drained soil. It is equally happy in full sun or partial shade, though sunnier spots encourage more flowers. It requires little maintenance other than a light trim after flowering to keep it neat.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Most well-drained soils.
Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.
Flowering: Apr, May.
