Lolog Barberry 'Mystery Fire'

Berberis × lologensis 'Mystery Fire' is a spectacular evergreen hybrid barberry that provides a breathtaking floral display in spring. This vigorous shrub features small, glossy, holly-like dark green leaves with occasional spines, forming a dense and prickly barrier ideal for perimeter hedging. In April and May, it is smothered in pendulous clusters of brilliant, fiery orange flowers that are much larger and showier than many other Berberis species. These flowers are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. Following the bloom, small blue-black berries appear in autumn. 'Mystery Fire' has an upright yet arching habit, lending itself well to an informal, flowering boundary hedge. It is fully hardy in the UK and achieves its best flowering and foliage density when planted in full sun, though it will tolerate partial shade. It is adaptable to most soil types but requires good drainage. Pruning should be done immediately after flowering to preserve the next year's flower buds.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Well-drained loam or clay.

Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.

Flowering: Apr, May.
