Japanese Barberry 'Helmond Pillar'

This deciduous shrub is an exceptional choice for UK gardeners seeking a Narrow, upright hedge with architectural flair. 'Helmond Pillar' is distinguished by its columnar habit, reaching up to 1.5 metres while remaining quite slim. The foliage is a deep, rich purple-red throughout the summer, turning a spectacular fiery orange and scarlet in the autumn before falling. In spring, it produces small, yellow flowers that are often hidden by the leaves but provide nectar for early pollinators. It is extremely hardy (H7) and grows well in most soil types, provided they are well-drained. The stems are armed with sharp spines, making it an excellent deterrent hedge against unwanted intruders or pets. It requires very little pruning to maintain its vertical form, though a light trim in winter can help tidy the shape. It thrives best in full sun, which intensifies the dark leaf colouration.

Sun: Full sun.

Soil: Most well-drained soils.

Hardiness: H7 — below −20°C.

Flowering: Apr, May.
