Dwarf Leopard Lily
Belamcanda chinensis, now reclassified as Iris domestica, is commonly known as the Dwarf Leopard Lily or Blackberry Lily. This unusual tuberous perennial offers a unique display in UK gardens with its striking orange-spotted flowers resembling leopard print, followed by decorative seed pods that split open to reveal shiny, black, berry-like seeds. The iris-like foliage provides an attractive backdrop throughout the growing season. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, making it suitable for borders, rock gardens, or gravel gardens. It is relatively drought-tolerant once established and generally pest-free, requiring minimal maintenance. The plant offers architectural interest and extends the season of interest with its distinctive fruit in autumn, adding a unique texture to the garden.
