Begonia 'Picotee Lace Red'

Begonia 'Picotee Lace Red' is a show-stopping tuberous begonia variety that is a favourite for UK summer bedding and pot displays. It is famous for its large, double, frilled flowers that feature a complex colour pattern: pure white or cream petals with a vibrant, jagged red edge (the picotee). These blooms can be up to 15cm across and are held against dark green, serrated foliage. This variety has an upright habit, growing to about 30-40cm. In the UK, it is tender (H2) and is best started into growth indoors in March before being moved outside after the final frosts in May or June. It thrives in a sheltered, partially shaded position where the delicate petals are protected from the midday sun and heavy rain. Consistent watering and weekly feeding with a high-potash fertiliser will ensure a spectacular display until the first frosts. In late autumn, the tubers should be lifted, cleaned, and stored in dry compost in a frost-free shed.

Sun: Partial shade.

Soil: Rich, well-drained compost.

Hardiness: H2 — down to 1°C.

Flowering: Jul, Aug, Sep, Oct.
