Windbreak Bamboo Galore

A giant among the running bamboos, this species is incredibly tough and vigorous. It is famous for its very thick, rigid, upright canes that can reach 6-8 metres in UK conditions. The leaves are large, leathery, and a dark, glossy green. Because it is such a powerful runner and forms such a dense, impenetrable thicket, it is the absolute best choice for creating a high windbreak or a visual screen in a large, rural garden. It is extremely hardy (H6) and can withstand the most exposed conditions where other bamboos might be shredded by the wind. However, it should NEVER be planted in a small garden without a professional-grade root barrier, as it is very invasive. In the right setting, it provides a magnificent, architectural presence and a sense of total privacy. It is unfussy about soil type as long as it is relatively moist.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Any moist soil.

Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.
