Buddha's Belly Bamboo 'Kimmei'

While typically a tropical species, 'Kimmei' is a cultivar of Buddha's Belly that can be grown in milder, sheltered parts of the UK (H2-H3) in containers that can be moved indoors in winter. It is famed for its swollen internodes, which give the culms a distinctive 'Buddha's Belly' appearance, especially when stressed by dryness. It can reach 2-4m in height in a pot. It needs full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. The culms are initially green, often yellowing with age, particularly if grown in full sun, and can reach a diameter of several centimetres. This exotic bamboo makes a unique focal point on a patio or in a conservatory.
