Bamboo 'Fernleaf'

Bambusa multiplex 'Fernleaf' is a truly dainty and exotic-looking clumping bamboo that is perfect for fine-textured interest in a UK garden. It is most notable for its unique foliage; each branch is packed with tiny, narrow leaves (only 1-2cm long) that are arranged in a flat, fern-like spray. This creates a soft, cloud-like aesthetic that is quite different from any other bamboo. It is a dwarf variety, usually staying between 1.5 and 2.5 metres tall. In the UK, it is slightly tender (H3) and is best suited for sheltered city gardens, coastal areas, or as a magnificent specimen in a large conservatory. It is non-invasive and forms a very dense clump. If the plant becomes too tall or leggy, it can be pruned back hard to encourage a thicker, more 'ferny' growth habit. It requires a sunny, sheltered spot and regular watering during the summer months. It is an excellent choice for those who want a tropical feel without the worry of running roots.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Moist, well-drained soil.

Hardiness: H3 — down to −5°C.
