Hedge Bamboo (Alphonse Karr) 'Alphonse Karr'

'Alphonse Karr' is a stunning clumping bamboo that is often grown in containers in the UK. It is famous for its bright yellow canes which are randomly striped with green. In a sunny spot, the young canes often take on a beautiful pinkish or reddish glow. It has a very dense, bushy habit and small, delicate leaves. In most of the UK, it is considered marginally hardy (H3) and is best treated as a patio plant that can be moved to a conservatory or very sheltered spot over winter. In the warmest parts of the South West or London, it may survive outside year-round in a protected corner. It is a non-invasive clumper and is very responsive to pruning, allowing it to be kept at a specific height or shape. It prefers a very fertile, well-drained soil and regular feeding during the growing season to look its best.
