Aubretia 'Doctor Mules'

Aubrieta 'Doctor Mules' is perhaps one of the most famous and enduring cultivars of this classic spring-flowering alpine. It is widely regarded for its exceptional floral display and vigorous growth. Forming dense, evergreen mats of small, hairy, grey-green leaves, it becomes completely smothered in small, four-petalled flowers of an intense, glowing violet-purple in mid to late spring. This cultivar is particularly prized for the depth and richness of its colour, which remains vibrant even in strong sunlight. In the UK, it is a staple for rockeries, dry stone walls, and steep banks where it can cascade down to create a spectacular 'waterfall' of purple. It is incredibly hardy and easy to grow, provided it has excellent drainage and plenty of sun. After flowering, it is essential to trim the plant back hard with shears to maintain a compact, bushy habit and to prevent the centre from becoming woody and bare. It is a magnet for early-season bees.
