Aubretia Doctor Mules 'Doctor Mules'

'Doctor Mules' is a classic and venerable cultivar of the popular rock cress. It is widely considered one of the finest of all Aubrietas for its vigorous habit and the sheer depth of its flower colour. It forms a low, spreading mat of semi-evergreen, grey-green foliage that is smothered in mid-spring by a spectacular display of four-petalled, rich violet-purple flowers. In the UK, it is a quintessential plant for dry stone walls, rockeries, and the edges of sunny paths, where it can cascade beautifully over surfaces. It is extremely hardy (H7) and very easy to grow, preferring a sunny position and well-drained, preferably alkaline or neutral soil. To keep the plant compact and prevent it from becoming 'leggy' or woody in the centre, it should be cut back hard immediately after flowering; this often encourages a fresh flush of foliage and sometimes a few late flowers in autumn. It is a reliable and high-impact performer.
