Eared Lady Fern 'var. otophorum'

Athyrium otophorum var. otophorum is an exceptionally beautiful deciduous fern that offers a sophisticated colour palette for the shade garden. The emerging fronds are a striking pale chartreuse or lime-green, which contrasts vividly with the deep burgundy or purple-red colour of the stems (stipes) and central ribs. As the fronds mature, they transition to a soft, dusky grey-green, but the dark stems remain a prominent feature. This fern has a graceful, arching habit and reaches a height and spread of about 50-60cm. It is fully hardy in the UK (H5) and thrives in moist, humus-rich, acidic to neutral soil. A position in partial to full shade is essential to preserve the delicate colours of the foliage and prevent scorching. It is a refined addition to any woodland scheme, looking particularly effective alongside silver-leaved hostas or dark-leaved actaeas. It is relatively easy to care for once established.

Sun: Partial shade.
