Japanese Painted Fern 'Burgundy Lace'

Athyrium niponicum var. pictum, commonly known as the Japanese Painted Fern, is a stunning deciduous fern revered for its exquisitely coloured foliage. Native to East Asia, it forms a graceful, arching clump about 30-50cm tall and wide. The fronds are a mesmerising blend of silvery-grey, green, and often burgundy or purple, especially along the midribs, creating a beautiful variegated effect. This vibrant colouration is most pronounced in cooler temperatures and good light conditions (without direct sun). It thrives in moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil and partial to full shade, making it a superb choice for brightening up shady borders or containers.
