Greater Masterwort 'Shaggy'
Astrantia major 'Shaggy' is a captivating and unique cultivar also known as 'Margery Fish'. It is prized for its exceptionally large flower heads, which feature unusually long, green-tipped white bracts that give the bloom a distinctively 'shaggy' and starry appearance. These intricate flowers are held on slender stems above a mound of deeply lobed, palm-like green leaves. Growing to about 75cm, it is a fantastic choice for a woodland edge, a cottage garden, or a cool, moist border. The flowers are excellent for cutting and are also widely used in dried arrangements. Astrantias are loved by pollinators, particularly hoverflies and bees. 'Shaggy' thrives in a partially shaded position with moisture-retentive, humus-rich soil, although it will tolerate sun if the soil remains damp. It is fully hardy (H7) across the UK. Regular deadheading will encourage a second flush of flowers in late summer. It is a refined and elegant plant that adds a touch of sophistication to any garden design.
