Canadian Wild Ginger
Asarum canadense, or Canadian Wild Ginger, is an excellent groundcover solution for shaded UK gardens, typically growing 15-20cm high. It forms dense carpets of large, heart-shaped, velvety green leaves, which are its primary ornamental feature from spring until autumn. In April and May, unique, brownish-purple, jug-shaped flowers emerge at ground level, often hidden beneath the foliage. This perennial thrives in cool, moist, humus-rich soil and requires partial to full shade, mimicking its native woodland habitat. Fully hardy (RHS H6), it effectively suppresses weeds and creates a lush, verdant underplanting beneath trees and shrubs, providing long-lasting textural interest.
