Giant River Cane 'Macon'

While the species is native to the US, the 'Macon' cultivar is particularly noted for its hardiness and suitability for the UK climate. This is a running bamboo that forms dense thickets of upright, stiff canes with relatively large, matte-green leaves. In the UK, it typically reaches 3-4 metres. It is exceptionally tough and can handle much wetter soil conditions than most other bamboos, making it an excellent choice for planting near ponds, streams, or in boggy areas of the garden where other species might fail. It is very hardy (H6). Because it is a runner, it requires space to spread or a root barrier. Its habit is more 'naturalistic' and wild than the neat Phyllostachys or Fargesia, making it perfect for a wildlife-friendly garden or a damp, informal screen. It is incredibly robust and requires very little attention once established.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Wet or moist, fertile soil.

Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.
