Evergreen Dutchman's Pipe
Aristolochia sempervirens is a charming and unusual evergreen climber that is much more manageable than its larger relative, A. macrophylla. It features glossy, leathery, heart-shaped leaves that provide year-round interest. The flowers are fascinating, being small, curved 'pipes' that are yellow with dark purple-brown markings, appearing tucked among the foliage in late spring and summer. It is a relatively low-growing climber, usually reaching about 2 metres, making it perfect for smaller gardens or for growing in large pots on a sheltered patio. In the UK, it is reasonably hardy (H4) but prefers a warm, sheltered spot away from cold, biting winds. It is generally pest and disease-free. Because of its exotic appearance and interesting floral structure, it is a great talking point for plant enthusiasts. It prefers well-drained soil and can cope with a range of light conditions.
