Mountain Sandwort 'Blanche'
Arenaria montana 'Blanche' is a stellar performer in the UK garden, offering a sophisticated and prolific floral display. This evergreen alpine forms low-growing, spreading hummocks of very fine, dark green foliage that provides an excellent backdrop for its blooms. From late spring through early summer, it is literally smothered in large, cup-shaped flowers of the purest white, each featuring a subtle greenish-yellow eye. The flowers are surprisingly large for the size of the plant, often reaching up to 2cm in diameter. 'Blanche' is particularly valued for its ability to soften hard edges, cascading beautifully over rocks or the sides of containers. It is a robust and reliable plant, showing good resistance to pests and diseases. While it prefers full sun, it can tolerate very light shade, provided it is grown in very well-drained soil. It is particularly effective when planted in large groups to create a snow-like drift of white in an alpine setting or at the front of a sunny border.
