Strawberry Tree
Arbutus x andrachnoides is a superb evergreen large shrub or small tree, valued for its striking ornamental bark and year-round interest in UK gardens. This hybrid strawberry tree features highly attractive, peeling bark that exfoliates in thin flakes to reveal smooth, cinnamon-red new bark beneath, creating a truly eye-catching display, especially in winter. It carries glossy, dark green leaves. While flowers and fruits are less prolific than Arbutus unedo, it occasionally produces small white bells and red berries. It prefers full sun and well-drained, acidic to neutral soil and is relatively hardy, thriving in sheltered positions.
