Alpine Columbine
A true aristocrat of the high mountains, this species is noted for its large, nodding flowers of a deep, luminous blue, often with a subtle white edge to the petals. Unlike many hybrid columbines which can reach significant heights, this alpine specialist remains relatively compact, usually staying under 30-40cm. The foliage is delicate and blue-green, providing a lovely backdrop for the intense blooms in late spring. In the UK, it performs best in a cool, slightly sheltered spot within a rock garden or a raised bed that mimics its native scree slopes. It is fully hardy (H5) but can be short-lived, though it often self-seeds if the conditions are favourable. It prefers a moist but well-drained soil and does not enjoy baking heat, so a north or east-facing aspect is often ideal. It is a perfect choice for bringing a touch of high-altitude elegance to a temperate garden collection.
