Celery 'Lathom Self-Blanching'
'Lathom Self-Blanching' is a historic and highly reliable celery variety that revolutionized celery growing for the British home gardener. Unlike traditional varieties that required arduous "trenching" (piling soil up around the stems to turn them white), this cultivar naturally produces crisp, pale, sweet stalks without the need for extra work. It has a compact, upright habit and is particularly well-suited to the UK's cooler, damp summers. It is a thirsty plant and requires a moisture-rich soil that never truly dries out; adding plenty of organic matter is essential. Sown in spring, it is ready for harvest from late summer to the first autumn frosts. It is hardy to H2. The flavour is excellent—clean and crunchy—making it ideal for salads, soups, and the classic British cheese board. It is a great choice for those who find traditional trench celery too difficult to manage.
