African Mallow 'El Rayo'

Anisodontea capensis 'El Rayo' is a fast-growing, evergreen sub-shrub that brings a touch of Mediterranean flair to UK gardens, despite its South African origins. It is celebrated for its incredibly long flowering season, often producing blossom from spring right through to the first frosts. The flowers are hibiscus-like, featuring bright pink petals with a striking darker raspberry-red eye and delicate veining. Its habit is upright and somewhat woody at the base, reaching up to 1.5 metres in height. In the UK, it is rated as H3 hardiness, meaning it requires a sheltered spot in milder coastal areas or the protection of a south-facing wall. In colder regions, it is best grown in a large container and moved into a frost-free greenhouse for winter. It thrives in well-drained soil and requires full sun to encourage the best floral display. Pruning in early spring helps maintain a bushy, compact shape and prevents the plant from becoming too leggy.
