Angelica
Angelica is a magnificent, short-lived perennial or biennial that adds dramatic height and structure to the herb garden. In its second year, it can reach up to 2 metres, producing huge, architecturally striking umbels of greenish-yellow flowers. The stems are thick and hollow, traditionally candied for cake decoration, while the leaves and seeds have a unique, bittersweet, musky-celery scent used in gin production and herbal liqueurs. Unlike most herbs, Angelica thrives in the cool, damp UK climate and actually prefers damp, semi-shaded positions similar to its native riverbank habitats. It is fully hardy (H6). Because it usually dies after flowering, it is important to allow some seed to drop to ensure a constant supply of new plants. The young, bright green foliage is very attractive in spring. It is a fantastic plant for attracting a wide range of beneficial insects, including hoverflies and ladybirds, which help control pests in the rest of the garden.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Moist, deep, fertile soil.
